What Does a Drum Bearing Fault Sound Like?
Here’s a real example of noisy drum bearings:
The drum bearings support the inner drum as it spins at high speed during the wash and spin cycles. When they fail, the drum loses its smooth rotation – creating noise, vibration, and eventually causing significant damage to surrounding components. A washing machine drum bearing fault is one of the most serious faults we attend.
The bearings sit at the rear of the machine, where the drum shaft passes through the outer drum. They’re designed to handle thousands of cycles over many years, but they do wear out – and when they do, the consequences can be costly.
Important: Don’t ignore a noisy drum. The longer a bearing fault is left, the more damage it causes to other components. What starts as a rumble can quickly progress to a machine that’s beyond economic repair.
Signs of a Drum Bearing Fault
1. Rumbling or Grinding Noise
The most common symptom is a loud rumbling, growling, or grinding noise during the wash or spin cycle. It typically gets louder as spin speed increases. In early stages it may only be noticeable at high spin speeds – as the fault progresses, it becomes constant and increasingly loud.
2. Drum Movement and Wobble
With the machine empty and door open, push the drum up, down, and side to side. A worn bearing will allow noticeable play – it should feel firm with minimal movement. Significant wobble is a clear indicator of bearing wear.
3. Marks on Laundry
As the drum drops due to bearing wear, it can begin to catch on the door seal. This leaves dark marks or grease streaks on laundry and causes damage to the door seal itself.
5. Burning Smell or Smoke
In severe cases, failed bearings generate enough friction to cause a burning smell or even smoke. If you notice either, stop using the machine immediately. This level of heat can damage surrounding components and presents a serious risk.
4. Leaking from the Rear
In more advanced cases, bearing failure allows water to track along the drum shaft and leak from the rear of the machine. By this stage, the fault has typically caused damage well beyond just the bearings.
Why Do Drum Bearings Fail?
Age and regular use are the primary factors – most machines develop bearing wear from around 7-10 years of use. In Bath’s hard water area, limescale can accelerate this. Other contributing factors include:
• Consistent overloading of the machine
• Water ingress past the drum seal
• Hard water and limescale buildup
• Poor quality original bearings on budget machines
1600rpm – A Pattern We See Regularly
In our experience, machines with 1600rpm spin speeds develop bearing faults considerably more than their 1200rpm or 1400rpm equivalents. The additional centrifugal force at maximum spin puts significantly more stress on the bearing housing with every cycle. If you have a 1600rpm machine, consider dropping the spin speed to 1400rpm for everyday washing – your clothes will still come out perfectly dry enough, and it could make a meaningful difference to the life of your bearings.
The Real Problem – Welded Outer Drums
To replace the bearings, the outer drum needs to be split into two halves to access the bearing housing. On the vast majority of modern washing machines, the outer drum is welded shut at the factory and simply cannot be separated.
This affects most mainstream brands – Hotpoint, Indesit, AEG, Zanussi, Electrolux, Beko, Candy, and most models from Bosch and others. It’s a manufacturer cost-saving measure that makes bearing replacement impossible without replacing the entire outer drum assembly. Even within brands, it varies by model – some Bosch models have splittable drums, others don’t.
When the outer drum is welded
The entire outer drum assembly needs replacing. This is a major, expensive component and – combined with the labour involved in a full machine stripdown – typically makes the repair uneconomical, particularly on machines over 5-7 years old.
When the outer drum can be split
On the minority of machines where the drum can be split, it’s still a significant job. Collapsed bearings frequently damage the drum spider and inner drum shaft, meaning additional parts are often needed beyond just the bearings. In severe cases, damage can extend to the door seal, heating element, and the outer drum itself. Even when technically possible, the total repair cost often makes it difficult to justify on anything but a relatively new, high-end machine.

Repair or Replace?
This is the key question with drum bearing faults, and we’ll always give you an honest assessment. In many cases, bearing faults are unfortunately beyond economic repair – not because the job can’t be done, but because the cost of parts and labour outweighs the value of the machine or the cost of replacement.
Factors we consider when advising on repair vs replace:
• Age and original value of the machine
• Whether the outer drum is welded or splittable
• Extent of secondary damage (spider, inner drum, door seal, heater)
• Parts availability and cost for the specific model
• Whether a new machine of equivalent quality is a better investment
