Heat Exchanger Fault – What It Means & Why You Need a Pro
What Does the Bosch Dishwasher E19 Error Code Mean?
The Bosch dishwasher E19 error code indicates a heat exchanger fault. Specifically, this means the recirculation valve (also called the outlet valve or drain valve) inside the heat exchanger has failed or become blocked. This is a component unique to Bosch’s patented heat exchange technology.
You’ll typically notice longer wash cycles, dishes not drying properly, or the dishwasher stopping mid-cycle with E19 displayed. This code also appears on Siemens and Neff dishwashers, which use the same Bosch technology.
Important: E19 requires accessing the heat exchanger system, which isn’t straightforward. Diagnosis and DIY repair can be tricky.
What Is the Heat Exchanger?
The heat exchanger is Bosch’s patented technology for energy-efficient dishwashing. It’s located on the left-hand side of the cleaning chamber, behind the inner wall.
How It Works
During the wash cycle, hot water that’s been used to clean your dishes passes through the heat exchanger. Cold water for the rinse cycle is fed into the exchanger alongside this hot waste water. Through heat transfer, the cold water warms up before being used, which saves energy and prevents thermal shock to delicate items.
The Recirculation Valve
Inside the heat exchanger is a recirculation valve (sometimes called the outlet valve or drain valve). This controls the flow of water through the heat exchange system. When this valve fails, you get the E19 error code.
Why Does E19 Happen?
The most common cause of E19 errors in the Bath and Somerset area is limescale buildup. Our hard water creates mineral deposits that accumulate in the heat exchanger over time, eventually causing the recirculation valve to stick or seize.
Other causes include:
• Debris blocking the valve
• Mechanical wear over time (typically 7-10 years)
• Electrical fault with the valve solenoid
• Damage from thermal stress
How We Repair Bosch Dishwasher E19 Errors
When you call Bath Washco for a Bosch dishwasher E19 error code repair:
1. Diagnose the exact fault
We test the heat exchanger system to determine whether the valve is stuck, broken, or if there’s a blockage. Sometimes cleaning and descaling can resolve the issue without parts replacement.
2. Access and repair
We safely access the heat exchanger, remove the faulty recirculation valve, and either clean or replace it depending on condition. We carry common Bosch heat exchanger components.
3. Test the repair
We run a brief test cycle to confirm the heat exchanger is functioning correctly and the E19 error has cleared.
