Heating Fault – Washing Machine Repair
What Does the Hotpoint Washing Machine F08 Error Code Mean?
The Hotpoint washing machine F08 error code indicates a heating fault. Your washing machine is running cycles but the water isn’t reaching the correct temperature – resulting in cold washes and clothes that aren’t coming out properly clean. In some cases the machine will stall mid-cycle and display F08.
This code also appears on Indesit and Whirlpool washing machines, which share the same technology under the Whirlpool Group. If you have any of these brands showing F08, the diagnosis and repair is the same.
Important: A cold wash might seem like something you can live with temporarily, but washing at incorrect temperatures affects hygiene, particularly for towels, bedding, and children’s clothing. It’s worth getting F08 diagnosed sooner rather than later.
What Causes the Hotpoint F08 Error Code?
1. Failed Heating Element (Most Common)
The heating element sits in the base of the drum and heats the water during the wash cycle. Over time it can burn out or fail – this is the cause in the majority of F08 faults we attend. In Bath and Wiltshire’s hard water area, limescale buildup on the element accelerates this process, causing it to overheat and fail prematurely.
2. NTC Thermistor Fault
The NTC thermistor monitors water temperature and feeds this information back to the machine’s control system. If it fails or gives incorrect readings, the machine may flag F08 even if the heating element itself is fine. Thermistor faults are less common than element failure but worth testing before condemning other components.
3. Wiring or PCB Fault (Rare)
On rare occasions, F08 can be caused by a wiring fault in the heating circuit or a PCB/software issue rather than a failed component. This is uncommon but worth ruling out during a proper diagnosis, particularly if the element and thermistor both test correctly.
Can You Test for F08?
There are a couple of simple checks you can make before calling an engineer:
✓ Feel the water temperature
Run a 60° cycle and carefully feel the door glass around 20-30 minutes in. It should be noticeably warm to hot. If the glass remains cold, the heating element almost certainly isn’t working.
✓ Check for limescale
If you’re in a hard water area and haven’t been using a regular descaler or dishwasher salt equivalent, limescale buildup is likely a contributing factor. This won’t fix the fault but gives a useful indication of what may have caused it.
F08 needs a professional diagnosis: Testing the heating circuit properly requires electrical testing equipment and knowledge of the heating circuit. Visual inspection alone isn’t sufficient – an element can appear fine but have failed internally.
How We Fix Hotpoint F08 Errors
Here’s what a typical F08 repair looks like:
1. Test and inspect the heating circuit
We test the heating element for continuity and carry out a visual inspection – an element can sometimes pass a continuity test yet still be faulty, so both steps matter.
2. Replace the faulty component
We carry common Hotpoint and Indesit heating elements and thermistors on the van. Most F08 repairs are completed in a single visit.
3. Run a test cycle
We run a brief test cycle to confirm the heating fault has cleared and the machine is washing at the correct temperature.
