Hoover Washing Machine E09 Error Code
Hoover Washing Machine E09 Error Code
Motor Fault – Common Causes
What Does Hoover E09 Error Code Mean?
The Hoover E09 error code on washing machines indicates a motor or motor brushes fault. This means the machine can’t detect the drum rotating properly, or the motor isn’t spinning the drum at the correct speed. The machine may refuse to start the cycle, or it stops mid-cycle displaying E09.
E09 typically appears during the wash or spin cycle when the motor should be running. The drum either won’t turn at all, spins very slowly, or the machine stops abruptly after attempting to start the motor.
What Causes Hoover E09 Error Code?
1. Worn Carbon Brushes (Most Common)
Carbon brushes are small components that make contact with the spinning motor. They wear down naturally over time – usually after 7-10 years of regular use. When they get too short, the motor can’t get the electrical contact it needs to run properly, triggering the E09 error.
This is by far the most common cause of E09 errors on Hoover washing machines. The brushes are a consumable part designed to wear out gradually, protecting the more expensive motor.
2. Faulty Tacho Sensor
The tacho sensor (tachometer) monitors how fast the drum is spinning. If the sensor fails or its wiring becomes damaged, the control board can’t detect motor rotation and displays E09. The motor might actually be working, but the machine doesn’t know because the sensor signal is missing.
3. Drainage Problem Triggering Motor Fault
Sometimes a drainage blockage or pump fault can trigger E09. If the machine can’t drain water properly, it may refuse to spin and display E09 instead of a drainage-specific error code. This happens because the control board detects the drum isn’t reaching the expected speed due to water weight.
4. Motor Failure (Rare)
Complete motor failure – due to bearing seizure, winding damage, or overheating – is much less common than brush wear or sensor faults. In most E09 cases, it’s the brushes or tacho sensor rather than the motor itself.
How We Diagnose E09 Errors
When you call us for a Hoover washing machine showing E09, here’s our diagnostic approach:
1. Check for drainage issues first
We check if water is draining properly, as a blocked pump or kinked hose can trigger E09. If drainage is the problem, fixing that resolves the error without motor work.
2. Test carbon brushes and motor
We access the motor and check carbon brush wear, test motor windings for continuity, and verify the motor spins freely. Worn brushes below 1cm need replacing.
3. Check tacho sensor and wiring
We verify the tacho sensor is generating a signal and all wiring connections are secure. A faulty sensor or damaged wiring disrupts the motor speed signal.
4. Replace faulty component
Once we’ve identified the cause – usually carbon brushes or the tacho sensor – we replace it and verify the E09 error doesn’t return.
Repair or replace? Carbon brush replacement is almost always worthwhile – it’s a relatively inexpensive fix. Tacho sensor replacement is also straightforward. Motor replacement costs more, so we’ll advise honestly on whether repair makes sense based on the machine’s age and condition. Read our repair vs replace guide for more details.
