Hisense Washer Dryer F17 Error Code

No Heat During Drying – Common Causes

What Does Hisense F17 Error Code Mean?

The Hisense F17 error code on washer dryer machines indicates a heating fault during the drying cycle. The machine washes normally but when it tries to dry, either the dryer won’t heat at all, or the overheat thermostat trips before clothes are dry.

F17 typically appears during or at the end of the drying cycle. Clothes come out damp or wet, and the machine may stop mid-dry displaying the error code. In some cases, the machine completes the cycle but clothes remain cold and soaking wet.

Washer dryers and lint: Unlike separate tumble dryers, washer dryers don’t have a traditional lint filter you can access easily. Lint builds up inside the machine over time, particularly in the drying fan housing and air ducts. This is the primary cause of F17 errors on Hisense washer dryers.

What Causes The Hisense Washer Dryer F17 Error Code?

1. Lint Buildup Causing Overheat Trip (Most Common)

Lint accumulates in the drying fan housing and air duct system. When airflow becomes restricted, the heating element or motor overheats. The overheat thermostat then trips to prevent fire risk, cutting power to the heating element and triggering the F17 error.

This is by far the most common cause we see on Hisense washer dryers. Machines that have been used regularly for several years without deep cleaning are particularly prone to this fault. The lint buildup can be severe – we’ve seen drying fans completely clogged with compacted lint and fluff.

2. Failed Dryer Heating Element

The heating element heats the air during drying. If it fails electrically – either open circuit or earth leakage – the dryer won’t produce heat and F17 appears. Element failure can be caused by age, overheating from lint restriction, or electrical fault.

3. Dryer Motor Fault

The dryer motor drives the fan that circulates hot air. If the motor fails or runs slowly due to bearing wear or lint restriction, airflow drops and the overheat thermostat trips. Motor issues can also trigger F17 even when the heating element is working fine.

4. Faulty Overheat Thermostat

The overheat thermostat (TOC – thermal overload cutout) is a safety device that cuts power when temperature gets too high. Sometimes the thermostat itself fails and trips unnecessarily, even when temperature is normal. This is less common than genuine overheating from lint buildup.

Why Lint Buildup Is the Main Problem

Washer dryers are particularly susceptible to lint accumulation because they don’t have an accessible lint filter like separate tumble dryers. Here’s why this causes F17 errors:

Restricted airflow causes overheating

As lint builds up in the fan housing and air ducts, airflow drops significantly. The heating element and motor run hotter because air isn’t moving efficiently. Eventually the overheat thermostat trips, cutting power to the heating element, stopping the drying cycle and displaying F17.

Deep cleaning required after repair

Even if the faulty component (element, motor, or thermostat) is replaced, the lint buildup remains. Without thorough cleaning of the fan housing and duct system, the new part will fail prematurely for the same reason. Proper repair includes complete lint removal.

Prevention: Washer dryers should ideally be deep cleaned every 2-3 years to prevent lint accumulation. Regular use of the machine on wash-only cycles (rather than wash and dry together) also reduces lint buildup as wet lint is flushed out with drain water.

How We Diagnose F17 Errors

When you call us for a Hisense washer dryer showing F17, here’s our diagnostic approach:

1. Check for lint buildup

We access the drying fan and air duct system to inspect for lint accumulation. Heavy lint buildup immediately indicates the cause of overheating and F17 error.

2. Test heating element and motor

We test the dryer heating element electrically for continuity and earth leakage. We also check the dryer motor runs correctly and the fan spins freely without restriction.

3. Check overheat thermostat

We verify the overheat thermostat (TOC) is functioning correctly and hasn’t failed in the tripped position. A faulty thermostat needs replacing even if it’s not the root cause.

4. Replace faulty component and deep clean

Once we’ve identified the failed component, we replace it and thoroughly clean all lint from the fan housing, air ducts, and drying system. This prevents the fault recurring.

Combined faults are common: We often find that lint buildup has caused both the thermostat to trip AND damaged the heating element or motor. In these cases, multiple components need replacing along with the deep clean.
