Bosch Washing Machine Faults & Error Codes Section

From 30 Years of Bosch, Siemens & Neff Repairs

Common Bosch, Siemens & Neff Washing Machine Faults

These are the faults we see most often on Bosch, Siemens and Neff washing machines — from genuine day-to-day experience over 30 years.

E18 / E06 / E36

Not Draining

The most common Bosch fault we see. Usually a blocked pump filter, failed drain pump, or blocked drain hose. Check and clean the filter first — it's accessible without an engineer and may save you a call-out.

Typically fixed in one visit

F21

Not Spinning

On older Bosch models carbon brush wear is a common cause — a cost-effective fix. On newer brushless motor machines more likely to be a control board or motor issue. Brushes carried as standard.

F43 / E43

Drum Won't Rotate

Drum not turning — can indicate a motor fault, worn brushes, or a seized drum. On Neff machines this code can present slightly differently. Needs proper diagnosis before parts are ordered.

Diagnosis required first

E29

Water Filling Error

Machine not filling with water or filling too slowly. Usually a faulty inlet valve, low water pressure, or blocked inlet filter. Also check the tap is fully open before calling us out.

Check the tap first

F23 / E23

Water Leak Detected

Leak sensor triggered. Can be a genuine leak — door seal, dispenser hose, or pump — or a sensor fault. The dispenser hose is a common Bosch-specific cause of this code, and is often misdiagnosed.

Electrical

Element Tripping RCD

Heating element failure causing the RCD to trip — usually moisture ingress or limescale damage to the element. Particularly common in hard water areas like Bath. Element needs replacing.

Elements carried as standard

Mechanical

Mouldy Door Seal

Common on older machines used predominantly on cooler wash cycles. The rubber door gasket deteriorates over time, harbouring mould and eventually leaking. Straightforward replacement.

Seals stocked for most Bosch models

Mechanical

Drum Bearings

Bosch bearings are notably durable compared to budget brands — less frequently needed, but when a Bosch does develop a rumbling noise during spin, bearings are usually the cause. A bearing replacement is a significant job and in most cases replacement is the more economical option. We'll always give you an honest assessment.

BSH Group Section

About the Brand Group

Bosch, Siemens & Neff — One Group, Shared Expertise

All three brands are manufactured under the same group — shared parts platforms and similar fault profiles mean we can cover all three.

Bosch

The benchmark of the group. Excellent build quality, very durable bearings, and good parts availability. Almost always worth repairing. The most common BSH machine we see.

You're on the Bosch page

Siemens

Same internal parts as Bosch in most cases, but with higher spec electronics and more technology features as standard. Broadly the same fault profile, with a few component differences on the more tech-heavy models.

Siemens washing machine repair

Neff

Almost exclusively integrated and built-in. Despite being in the same group, some Neff models use different parts — motors in particular. Error codes like E06 and F43 can behave slightly differently. Higher replacement cost makes repair particularly worthwhile.

Neff washing machine repair

Lamona

Howdens' own-brand appliance range. Some Lamona washing machines are rebadged Bosch or Neff machines under the bonnet — meaning BSH parts can cross over. Worth checking before assuming your Lamona is unrepairable or parts are unavailable.

Which? Trusted Trader — 10 Years
In most cases yes — Bosch machines are well built, have durable components, and good parts availability. The main exception is drum bearing failure, where the labour cost often makes replacement more sensible. For most other faults a Bosch is well worth fixing. Our repair vs replace guide covers this in detail.
Not draining is by far the most common fault we see on Bosch machines — usually showing as error code E18, E06 or E36. It's typically a blocked pump filter, failed drain pump, or blocked drain hose. Generally a straightforward fix completed in one visit.
Yes — we repair both freestanding and fully integrated Bosch washing machines. Integrated machines require careful access to avoid damaging cabinetry, which we're experienced with. All Bosch Series models covered, freestanding and built-in.
Yes — we carry Bosch parts in the van as standard. Heating elements, door seals, drain pumps, carbon brushes, inlet valves and dispenser hoses are all stocked for the most common Bosch models. Most repairs are completed in a single visit as a result.
Yes — Siemens and Neff are in the same group as Bosch, with shared parts platforms. We repair all three. Neff machines are almost all integrated and some use different parts — motors in particular — but we're familiar with the differences. Some Lamona machines are also rebadged Bosch or Neff, so give us a call if you're unsure.
Same-day and next-day appointments are often available across Bath, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Melksham, Keynsham, Radstock and Bradford on Avon. Call us on 01225 429127 to check availability.
This is almost always a faulty heating element — moisture ingress or limescale damage causes the element to earth fault and trip the RCD. It's a common fault in hard water areas like Bath. The element needs replacing and we carry them as standard for most Bosch models.
E18 is a drainage fault — the machine hasn't drained within the expected time. It's the most common Bosch error code we see. Usually caused by a blocked pump filter, failed drain pump, or kinked drain hose. Check the filter first — it's accessible without a engineer and may save you a call-out.
